Beginner karate classes in Calgary

Which class to come to

Adults start in the Beginner and Intermediate classes, which run at 6 pm on Monday and Wednesday and at 7 pm on Tuesday and Thursday. The Monday and Wednesday classes at 6 are open to all ages, and children aged six and up also have a beginners' class of their own on Friday at 6.

What you’ll learn first

Your first weeks are spent on kihon, the basic stances, punches, blocks and kicks that every advanced technique in karate is built from. Each class begins with about ten minutes of warming up and stretching, and the senior black belts are there to set an example and to answer any questions you have about the dojo after class.

Once the basics settle in, you'll start learning your first kata and practising with a partner. You'll begin as a white belt and move up through the coloured belts by grading, and our ranking system page shows the full order.

Your first visit

Register online, then come to your first beginner class about fifteen minutes early so we can check you in. You'll fill in the registration and waiver forms when you arrive, and the $199 is paid at the dojo that day.

Wear comfortable athletic clothing, because you won't need a uniform for the first class. Your gi is given to you at the dojo, or ordered in your size if we don't have one in stock.

What the $199 covers

The new student offer is a one time payment for your first two months of beginner classes and your karate gi, and your first year of ISKF association dues is included too.

Come and try a class

New members are always welcome. Register for the $199 new student offer and we’ll see you on the mat.
