Adult karate classes in Calgary
Our adult classes are for anyone eighteen and over, whether you've never set foot in a dojo or you trained years ago and want to find your way back. You'll be learning the same traditional Shotokan karate that Sensei David Jones has taught in Calgary since 1985.

What you’ll work on
Karate isn't a crash course in self defence. Several of the people you'll train beside have ten or twenty years behind them and are still refining the same basics you'll start with.
The first ten minutes of each class are warming up and stretching, which helps your flexibility and keeps your joints safe as you get going. From there you'll learn kihon, the basic movements, then kata, the set forms, and later kumite, where you practise distance and timing with a partner.
What to expect in class →Which classes to come to

Who teaches
Sensei David Jones, 8th Dan, began training in England in the early 1970s and came to Calgary in 1981. He represented Canada on the national team from 1986 to 1992, was Canadian national kumite champion in 1991, and sits on the ISKF Technical Committee. He still teaches in the dojo he opened, alongside a large group of senior black belts.
Those black belts are there to set an example in every class, and they're happy to answer questions about how things work in the dojo if you catch them before or after training.
