Kids karate classes in Calgary

Our junior program is for children from six to seventeen, and it's led by two senior instructors, one of whom came through the program himself as a boy. Children have their own classes on Tuesday and Friday evenings at our dojo in northeast Calgary, and they can start at any point in the year.

Who teaches the children

Sensei Robert Morgan and Crystal Schatz lead the junior program together. Robert came through this same program himself more than 25 years ago and now holds the rank of 7th dan, while Crystal has trained since 1997 and is ranked 5th dan. Both of them have competed at the ISKF World Shoto Cup.

Behind them is Sensei David Jones, 8th Dan, who opened the dojo in 1985. There are now three generations of members training at the dojo.

What a children’s class looks like

Each class starts with about ten minutes of warming up and stretching. After that the children work on the basics, the stances, punches, blocks and kicks that everything else in karate is built on, and as they move up the belts they learn kata and begin practising with a partner.

Classes open and close with a short formal bow. In Japanese karate that's simply a sign of respect for each other and for the art, and it has no religious meaning at all. We've always found that the focus children build here goes home with them and into school, too.

How old does my child need to be?

Children can start once they're six. That's the club's policy, so we can't take younger children, but there's no need to wait any longer than that if your child is keen to try.
